The Voluntary Free Zone of Thesum is a massive, economically powerful nation, ruled by Baphemous with an even hand, and notable for its keen interest in outer space. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 4.418 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it is mainly concerned with Education, although Defence and Commerce are secondary priorities. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Northshore. The average income tax rate is 96%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Tourism industry, followed by Information Technology and Book Publishing.

There are no minimum wage laws, the newspaper industry is subsidised by the government in order to keep it afloat, politicians are often found scavenging bins at night to supplement their income, and Red Cross demand for body bags is rising while sutures go unused. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Thesum's national animal is the Thesumian Snow Tiger, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, its national religion is Baphemism, and its currency is the Quin.

Thesum is ranked 9th in Sothoryos and 58,327th in the world for Most Eco-Friendly Governments, scoring 13 on the Dolphin Recycling Awareness Index.
