The Floral Land of The Orchids is a massive, genial nation, notable for its absence of drug laws. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 4.969 billion are free to do what they want with their own bodies, and vote for whoever they like in elections; if they go into business, however, they are regulated to within an inch of their lives.

The enormous, liberal government is effectively ruled by the Department of the Environment, with areas such as Healthcare and Commerce receiving almost no funds by comparison. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of The Flower Pot. The average income tax rate is 44%, but much higher for the wealthy. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

The government is spending millions on renovating the public transportation system, space shuttles regularly launch rubbish into space, cars are banned from built-up areas, and survivors receive aid from only the most environmentally-friendly transport. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is crippling, and the police force struggles against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. The Orchids's national animal is the orchid, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the orchid.

The Orchids is ranked 310th in 10000 Islands and 8,692nd in the world for Most Compassionate Citizens, scoring 16 on the Kitten Softness Rating.
