The Confederacy of The Independent Provinces is a huge, economically powerful nation, renowned for its complete absence of social welfare. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 595 million are either ruled by a sleek, efficient government or a conglomerate of multinational corporations; it's difficult to tell which.

The medium-sized, pro-business government is mainly concerned with Defence, although Education and Law & Order are secondary priorities. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of New Columbia. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 8%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Gambling industry, followed by Arms Manufacturing and Information Technology.

The mining industry is making inroads into environmentally sensitive areas, long arduous trials are held for the most trivial of offences, cyber-crime and tin-foil hat sales are both increasing at record rates, and organ donation rates are among the lowest in the region. Crime is a problem. The Independent Provinces's national animal is the Falcon, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Confederate Dollar.

The Independent Provinces is ranked 2nd in Conservative Alliance and 30,333rd in the world for Shortest Average Lifespan, scoring -10 on the Bus Surprisal Index.
