The Republic of The Amyclae is a huge, economically powerful nation, remarkable for its complete absence of social welfare. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 755 million are effectively ruled by a group of massive corporations, who run for political office and provide their well-off citizens with world-class goods and services. Their poorer citizens, however, are mostly starving to death while being urged to go out and get real jobs. The populace has reasonably extensive civil rights, although these are mostly aimed at allowing them to buy whatever they like.

The minute, pro-business government, or what there is of one, juggles the competing demands of Religion & Spirituality, Commerce, and Law & Order. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 9%. A healthy private sector is led by the Retail industry, followed by Pizza Delivery and Tourism.

Psychological disorders are a taboo subject, main battle tanks stalk the woods of The Amyclae in search of Hyacinths, eight year-olds can be seen lighting up in public areas, and a typical fast food menu item could serve a small army. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is pervasive. The Amyclae's national animal is the Hyacinth, and its currency is the Clio.
