The Merchant Republic of Tarricoe is a gargantuan, cultured nation, ruled by Benjamin J Riley with an even hand, and renowned for its sprawling nuclear power plants. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 11.774 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Defence, and Social Equality. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of New Venice. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 93%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Uranium Mining, Information Technology, and Book Publishing industries.

Tarricoe is notorious for its citizens' infidelity, mobile phone masts are being erected all over the country, crowds of flag-burning protesters tend to accidentally become crowds of burning protesters, and the nation's new foreign policy of 'very disproportionate retribution' has its neighbors on edge. Crime is well under control, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Tarricoe's national animal is the Gryphon, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, its national religion is Hedonism, and its currency is the Crown.

Tarricoe is ranked 16th in Equilism and 8,855th in the world for Shortest Average Lifespan, scoring 1 on the Bus Surprisal Index.
