The Free Land of Tanular is a gargantuan, cultured nation, ruled by The Keeper with an iron fist, and renowned for its punitive income tax rates. Its hard-nosed, cynical population of 12.213 billion are proud of their wide-ranging civil freedoms, and those who aren't tend to be dragged off the streets by men in dark suits and hustled into cars with tinted windows.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt, liberal government stops and the rest of society begins, but it is mainly concerned with Education, although the Environment and Healthcare are on the agenda. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of New Politzania. The average income tax rate is 56%, and even higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Book Publishing industry.

Meat-eating is frowned upon, organised sports are frowned upon as frivolous, bizarre-looking creatures called 'aardvarkdogs' dominate wildlife preserves, and the government has cut taxes in the face of widespread tax evasion. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Tanular's national animal is the aardvark, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the urgle.
