The Empire of Splanger is a massive, safe nation, ruled by The Great Broomfondle with an iron fist, and notable for its unlimited-speed roads. Its compassionate, cynical population of 2.065 billion are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.

There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded, corrupt individuals juggles the competing demands of Defence, Law & Order, and the Environment. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Walstamstanleyborough. The average income tax rate is 11%, but much higher for the wealthy. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Crime suspects are forced to submit to blood testing, all-natural foods are becoming a major fad, prisons are crowded with possible terrorist suspects, and the fire protection service is wholly government-funded. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force. Splanger's national animal is the Dugong, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the Horschnickel.

Splanger is ranked 2,218th in 10000 Islands and 108,742nd in the world for Largest Welfare Programs, scoring -2 on the Safety Net Mesh Density Rating.
