The Republic of South Mike is a massive, genial nation, ruled by Leader with an even hand, and notable for its hatred of cheese. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 2.426 billion are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it is mainly concerned with Education, although Healthcare and Social Equality are on the agenda. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of South Mike City. The average income tax rate is 88%, and even higher for the wealthy. A tiny private sector is dominated by the Book Publishing industry.

The government is attempting to revitalize a gutted private sector, people can often be seen driving to work in war-surplus tanks, anti-government political posters adorn every building like wallpaper, and religious organizations are being forced to leave the country or pay income taxes like everybody else. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. South Mike's national animal is the Jackalope, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the Clam.

South Mike is ranked 4,131st in the West Pacific and 98,086th in the world for Shortest Average Lifespan, scoring -32 on the Bus Surprisal Index.
