It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Defence, Law & Order, and Social Welfare. The average income tax rate is 100%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Information Technology, Beef-Based Agriculture, and Uranium Mining industries.

Skateparks can be found in every city, Max Barry is this year's Miss Saint Mere Eglise, university graduates and new home-owners toil in labour camps to work off their debts, and children as young as twelve are conscripted into the armed forces. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Saint Mere Eglise's national animal is the Rooster, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Kroonar.
