The Corporate State of Ridann is a gargantuan, economically powerful nation, ruled by Chairman Henry Bolthrow with an iron fist, and remarkable for its keen interest in outer space. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 10.785 billion are rabid consumers, partly through choice and partly because the government tells them to and dissenters tend to vanish from their homes at night.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt, pro-business government stops and the rest of society begins, but it is mainly concerned with Defence, although Law & Order and Education are on the agenda. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Cardinal. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 49%. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Arms Manufacturing industry.

The alarmingly racist TV show 'Bigtopians Say the Darndest Things' is a hit, public footpaths are being slowly eroded by the burgeoning number of ramblers, UFO sightings are listed daily in the morning news, and it is mandatory to learn evolution in schools. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Ridann's national animal is the Ebon Falcon, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, its national religion is unlisted due to secularism, and its currency is the Credit.
