The Borderlands of Rainspread is a massive, economically powerful nation, renowned for its complete lack of prisons. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 2.187 billion are ruled by a mostly-benevolent dictator, who grants the populace the freedom to live their own lives but watches carefully for anyone to slip up.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt government stops and the rest of society begins, but it concentrates mainly on Defence, although Law & Order and Healthcare are secondary priorities. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Rainspread City. The average income tax rate is 82%, and even higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Arms Manufacturing industry.

Almost half of the child population live rough on the streets, soldiers are slaughtered in their thousands due to lack of training, the government has undertaken a massive education and health program to combat VODAIS, and most citizens in Rainspread are abject pyrophobes after extremely graphic pamphlets were mailed nationwide by the government. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is crippling, probably because of the country's utter lack of prisons. Rainspread's national animal is the ManBearPig, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, its national religion is a major religion, and its currency is the grain of rice.

Rainspread is ranked 3,291st in the Pacific and 74,532nd in the world for Shortest Average Lifespan, scoring -15 on the Bus Surprisal Index.
