The Empire of Quelesh is a colossal, genial nation, renowned for its strong anti-business politics. Its compassionate, hard-working, intelligent population of 6.434 billion hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, liberal government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Social Welfare, the Environment, and Social Equality. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Mugendai. The average income tax rate is 97%. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

The lowest age at which one can marry has been recently lowered to 12, the nation's youth is held blameless for all crimes, violently opinionated speakers can be heard preaching their hateful views on every street corner, and referenda are held for every conceivable government action. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is crippling, and the police force struggles against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. Quelesh's national animal is the Yamata no Orochi, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the meseta.

Quelesh is ranked 55th in Eastern Islands of Dharma and 101,373rd in the world for Largest Trout Fishing Sector, scoring -13 on the Nemo Depletion Efficiency Index.
