Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 2.851 billion are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt government stops and the rest of society begins, but it devotes most of its attentions to Defence, with areas such as the Environment and Social Welfare receiving almost no funds by comparison. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Praetiam City. The average income tax rate is 80%, and even higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Information Technology industry, followed by Arms Manufacturing and Retail.

Midnight pizza breaks are common among the work-from-home population, military service is compulsory, all beauty contests have been banned, and phone taps are frequently carried out by the police. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Praetiam's national animal is the Praeterbear, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Praetik.

Praetiam is ranked 18th in Kallisto and 15,019th in the world for Largest Public Sector, scoring 19 on the Bureaucratic Comprehensiveness Rating Scale Index.
