The Independent Dominion of Pownship is a massive, economically powerful nation, ruled by Shipper Pownman with a fair hand, and remarkable for its devotion to social welfare. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 3.166 billion hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, liberal government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Law & Order, and Commerce. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Sown Phip. The average income tax rate is 89%, and even higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Information Technology, Book Publishing, and Furniture Restoration industries.

Morning coffees are no longer the same since the disappearance of newspapers, retail stores offer sales every hour on the hour, UFO sightings are listed daily in the morning news, and the government is notorious for leaving citizens with almost nothing from their inheritance. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Pownship's national animal is the Pown Daddy, which is also the nation's favorite main course, its national religion is Powncrashipy, and its currency is the Powner.

Pownship is ranked 3,844th in the West Pacific and 89,530th in the world for Shortest Average Lifespan, scoring -21 on the Bus Surprisal Index.
