The Private Limited Company of Poneria is a massive, safe nation, ruled by The Board of Directors with an iron fist, and renowned for its keen interest in outer space. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 2.367 billion are ruled with an iron fist by the corrupt, dictatorship government, which oppresses anyone who isn't on the board of a Fortune 500 company. Large corporations tend to be above the law, and use their financial clout to gain ever-increasing government benefits at the expense of the poor and unemployed.

The tiny, corrupt, moralistic, pro-business government juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Commerce, and Defence. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Port Hoofshan. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing, Information Technology, and Uranium Mining industries.

Vile black smog from coal power plants has enveloped several major urban centres, smoking is banned in public areas, tourists need only sign on the dotted line to become citizens, and phone taps are frequently carried out by the police. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Poneria's national animal is the Harpy, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Copper Bit.
