The Republic of Phidias is a gargantuan, economically powerful nation, remarkable for its strong anti-business politics. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 10.042 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Defence, Social Welfare, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 36%. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Cheese Exports.

Drug distribution is tightly controlled by the government, Phidias's navy has been named the scourge of the seven thousand seas, polygamy is legal, and radio shows frequently feature people denouncing religion. Crime is relatively low, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Phidias's national animal is the golden ellephant, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the gold and ivory.
