The Empire of Paria is a huge, devout nation, remarkable for its restrictive gun laws. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 657 million are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defence, and Religion & Spirituality. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Paria City. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 37%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, followed by Gambling and Uranium Mining.

Politicians are often seen with soldiers pointing guns at their heads, only the brainiest citizens become academics, guns are banned, and the police force is rumoured to be made up of evil shadows with no souls. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Paria's national animal is the Raven, and its currency is the Pariad.
