The Democratic Republic of Ovlov United is a colossal, economically powerful nation, ruled by Mehmet Helchstein with a fair hand, and remarkable for its hatred of cheese. Its compassionate, hard-working, intelligent population of 6.629 billion are effectively ruled by a group of massive corporations, who run for political office and provide their well-off citizens with world-class goods and services. Their poorer citizens, however, are mostly starving to death while being urged to go out and get real jobs. The populace has reasonably extensive civil rights, although these are mostly aimed at allowing them to buy whatever they like.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Law & Order, and Defence. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Swedalia. The average income tax rate is 75%. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Torture is illegal, a survey of the nation's rivers and children has shown that pesticide levels are at an all-time regional high, factories are regularly demolished to make way for low-cost housing areas, and the latest Harry Potter book is a bestseller. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Ovlov United's national animal is the purple-backed gorilla, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, its national religion is Christianity, and its currency is the cuso.
