The Depression of Olivia the Pig is a massive, socially progressive nation, ruled by Supreme President Olivia Pig with a fair hand, and renowned for its devotion to social welfare. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 1.965 billion are free to do what they want with their own bodies, and vote for whoever they like in elections; if they go into business, however, they are regulated to within an inch of their lives.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of the Environment, Education, and Social Welfare. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Oliviaville. The average income tax rate is 99%. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Military barracks resemble five-star hotels, the average commuter spends four hours a day driving to and from work, a weakened police force struggles to maintain law and order, and the Supreme Court vehemently protects civil rights and the right to privacy. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Olivia the Pig's national animal is the boar, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, its national religion is pigism, and its currency is the pig cash.
