The Democratic Republic of Occoron is a massive, cultured nation, renowned for its irreverence towards religion. Its compassionate, hard-working, intelligent population of 1.966 billion hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

The government -- a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked morass -- is mainly concerned with Education, although Commerce and Healthcare are on the agenda. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Montevideo. The average income tax rate is 19%, but much higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Book Publishing, Furniture Restoration, and Tourism industries.

Invading armies are given hard glares for their cheek, commuter vessels have trouble staying afloat due to increased passengers, same-sex marriages are increasingly common, and citizens recently voted in favour of declaring bubblewrap an 'abomination of nature'. Crime is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Occoron's national animal is the dog, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Euro.

Occoron is ranked 73rd in European Union and 79,733rd in the world for Shortest Average Lifespan, scoring -17 on the Bus Surprisal Index.
