The Socratic Republic of Nusseburg is a gargantuan, safe nation, notable for its restrictive gun laws. Its compassionate, hard-working population of 19.99 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it is mainly concerned with Commerce, although Defence and Social Equality are on the agenda. The average income tax rate is 96%. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Automobile Manufacturing industry.

Animal Liberationists are regularly jailed, Max Barry is this year's Miss Nusseburg, space research funding has hit a recent high while several military bases are being closed down, and long arduous trials are held for the most trivial of offences. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Nusseburg's national animal is the philosopher-king, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the drachma.

Nusseburg is ranked 12th in Atlantic and 99,492nd in the world for Shortest Average Lifespan, scoring -37 on the Bus Surprisal Index.
