The Island of Novaya Zemlja is a massive, socially progressive nation, ruled by a fair-handed ruler with a fair hand, and renowned for its complete lack of prisons. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 4.74 billion are effectively ruled by a group of massive corporations, who run for political office and provide their well-off citizens with world-class goods and services. Their poorer citizens, however, are mostly starving to death while being urged to go out and get real jobs. The populace has reasonably extensive civil rights, although these are mostly aimed at allowing them to buy whatever they like.

There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded, pro-business individuals is mainly concerned with Defence, although Law & Order and Commerce are on the agenda. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing, Book Publishing, and Automobile Manufacturing industries.

Convicted felons are forced into slavery for their crimes, 'The Anti-Government Hour' is a popular programme on many of Novaya Zemlja's radio stations, citizens are enjoying a recent large cut in taxes, and procrastination is a national sport. Crime is crippling, probably because of the country's utter lack of prisons. Novaya Zemlja's national animal is the snow fox, which is also the nation's favorite main course, its national religion is a major religion, and its currency is the check.

Novaya Zemlja is ranked 77th in The North Pacific and 3,691st in the world for Shortest Average Lifespan, scoring 19 on the Bus Surprisal Index.
