The Free Land of Northopia is a colossal, economically powerful nation, renowned for its hatred of cheese. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 6.967 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it is mainly concerned with Law & Order, although Education and Social Welfare are secondary priorities. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Improvapalooza. The average income tax rate is 99%. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Government officials frequently cut taxes as a distraction from antics with their secretaries, cities are engulfed by smog, CEOs and corporate executives are frequently found striking for better stock options, and the mob and the police have recently had numerous clashes in the back alleys of Northopia's cities due to the government's steadfast anti-casino stance. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Northopia's national animal is the squirrel, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the dollar.

Northopia is ranked 164th in Canada and 100,345th in the world for Shortest Average Lifespan, scoring -44 on the Bus Surprisal Index.
