The United States of North Meridia is a massive, economically powerful nation, ruled by President Garay with an even hand, and notable for its complete lack of prisons. Its hard-nosed population of 4.359 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Education, and Defence. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Alexton. The average income tax rate is 89%, and even higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Tourism industry, followed by Information Technology and Book Publishing.

UFO sightings are listed daily in the morning news, the wearing and manufacture of fur apparel is banned, businesses are forced to bring all work back within the nation’s borders, and children as young as twelve are conscripted into the armed forces. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. North Meridia's national animal is the Black Panther, its national religion is Movementarianism, and its currency is the Federal Credit.

North Meridia is ranked 3,894th in the West Pacific and 91,120th in the world for Shortest Average Lifespan, scoring -22 on the Bus Surprisal Index.
