The Great NES of North East Somerset is a gargantuan, socially progressive nation, notable for its keen interest in outer space. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 16.643 billion enjoy some of the most opulent lifestyles in the region, unless they are unemployed or working-class, in which case they are variously starving to death or crippled by easily preventable diseases.

There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded, pro-business individuals juggles the competing demands of Defence, Commerce, and Healthcare. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Uranium Mining, Information Technology, and Beef-Based Agriculture industries.

Pristine wilderness has been trashed in the quest for cheaper oil, employers may fire workers without giving any reason, protesters are up in arms over new nuclear power stations, and the country's famous rainforests are being bulldozed by the mining industry. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is crippling. North East Somerset's national animal is the Golden Pheasant, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Golden Sovereign.

North East Somerset is ranked 12th in Europeia and 1,511th in the world for Shortest Average Lifespan, scoring 34 on the Bus Surprisal Index.
