The Empire of New Tang is a massive, cultured nation, ruled by Emperor Tai Zong I with a fair hand, and renowned for its keen interest in outer space. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 1.676 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Healthcare, and Defence. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Changan Novus. The average income tax rate is 91%, and even higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Tourism, Information Technology, and Gambling industries.

Citizens are expected to be proficient in at least five languages, the government recently relinquished its monopoly on the mail service, tax evaders are regularly visited by agents of the New Tang Blood Tithe, and students are known to arrive at school in their pyjamas. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. New Tang's national animal is the Dragon, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, its national religion is the Cult of the God-Emperor, and its currency is the Tang Bi.
