The United States of New Orion Nebula is a massive, economically powerful nation, ruled by Rigel Mintaka with an iron fist, and remarkable for its keen interest in outer space. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 3.383 billion are ruled by a mostly-benevolent dictator, who grants the populace the freedom to live their own lives but watches carefully for anyone to slip up.

The government -- a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked, corrupt morass -- devotes most of its attentions to Defence, with areas such as Social Welfare and the Environment receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 38%, but much higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing industry, followed by Uranium Mining and Gambling.

A large-scale revitalization of the education system is underway, suppression of pro-democracy protests is a daily occurrence, almost all of New Orion Nebula's water is piped into the country from abroad for exorbitant prices, and the government's official stance on religion is that it is so very silly. Crime is well under control, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. New Orion Nebula's national animal is the meercat, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the warbuck.
