The Allied States of Neo-Essex is a massive, environmentally stunning nation, ruled by President Benjamin Ditch with an even hand, and renowned for its devotion to social welfare. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 2.563 billion are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, socially-minded government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Social Welfare, Education, and Law & Order. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Chelmsford. The average income tax rate is 80%, and even higher for the wealthy. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Scenic mountain valleys are flooded with water as damming projects get underway, Foxs are considered a delicacy, the mining industry is making inroads into environmentally sensitive areas, and politicians are to be found scavenging bins at night to supplement their income. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Neo-Essex's national animal is the Fox, which is also the nation's favorite main course, its national religion is Christianity, and its currency is the Pound.
