The Alternate History of Neder-Australie is a colossal, safe nation, ruled by His Democratic Highness with an even hand, and renowned for its happy-go-lucky citizens. Its compassionate population of 5.928 billion are highly moralistic and fiercely conservative, in the sense that they tend to believe most things should be outlawed. People who have good jobs and work quietly at them are lauded; others are viewed with suspicion.
It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it devotes most of its attentions to Religion & Spirituality, with areas such as Social Equality and Defence receiving almost no funds by comparison. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Nieuw Assen. The average income tax rate is 73%, and even higher for the wealthy. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.
It is illegal to make racist remarks in public, the government has cut taxes in the face of widespread tax evasion, parents must choose their children's names from a government-mandated master list, and the education system is famed for its taxing exams. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Neder-Australie's national animal is the Orangearoo, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, its national religion is Christianity, and its currency is the Australisch Guilder.
Neder-Australie is ranked 44th in Australia and 95,790th in the world for Largest Insurance Industry, scoring -5 on the Risk Expulsion Effectiveness Rating.
