The Union of Mauretania is a massive, economically powerful nation, ruled by President Cameron Harrison with an even hand, and remarkable for its complete absence of social welfare. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 3.373 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Defence, and Education. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Carpathia. The average income tax rate is 38%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Book Publishing industry, followed by Tourism and Beef-Based Agriculture.

The government is reining in public spending, religious education is a new government priority, citizens are enjoying a recent large cut in taxes, and the nation is currently revamping its entire education system. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Mauretania's national animal is the Alpine Oryx, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, its national religion is Protestant, and its currency is the Mauretania Rand.

Mauretania is ranked 5th in The World Directorate and 20,265th in the world for Largest Public Sector, scoring 17 on the Bureaucratic Comprehensiveness Rating Scale Index.
