The Capitalist Tyranny of Malformity is a massive, socially progressive nation, ruled by Dr Funkenstein with a fair hand, and remarkable for its anti-smoking policies. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 2.724 billion are free to do what they want with their own bodies, and vote for whoever they like in elections; if they go into business, however, they are regulated to within an inch of their lives.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Healthcare, and Social Equality. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Fundalk. The average income tax rate is 51%, and even higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Tourism industry.

Max Barry is this year's Miss Malformity, marijuana is legal in the privacy of your own home, high-income earners pay a 100% tax rate, and voting is compulsory. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is moderate, and the police force struggles against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. Malformity's national animal is the gibbon, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the clam.
