The Dictatorship of Madland is a huge, safe nation, notable for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 622 million are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Defence, Law & Order, and Religion & Spirituality. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Mental Hospital. The average income tax rate is 76%, and even higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Arms Manufacturing.

Parents live in fear of governmental 'child protection' squads, the government is making attempts at curtailing the flood of spam emails with little progress, nobody ever seems to enter or leave the armour-plated flying castle that serves as Madland's House of Parliament, and children as young as twelve are conscripted into the armed forces. Crime is well under control, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Madland's national animal is the monkey, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the brain.
