The Empire of Lionia is a massive, cultured nation, renowned for its punitive income tax rates. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 1.083 billion hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Social Welfare, and the Environment. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Lion City. The average income tax rate is 87%. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

The Lionia Automotive Racing Series draws millions of spectators annually while those near the tracks complain about the noise, the importance of winning Olympic gold medals is indoctrinated from an early age, employers may fire workers without giving any reason, and tourists from around the world come to visit the country's famous rainforests. Crime is totally unknown. Lionia's national animal is the Lion, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Lionian Dollar.

Lionia is ranked 4,111th in the West Pacific and 97,388th in the world for Shortest Average Lifespan, scoring -30 on the Bus Surprisal Index.
