The Republic of Krugin is a massive, socially progressive nation, ruled by President Lawson with an even hand, and remarkable for its sprawling nuclear power plants. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 2.764 billion enjoy extensive civil freedoms, particularly in social issues, while business tends to be more regulated.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it devotes most of its attentions to Education, with areas such as Religion & Spirituality and Social Welfare receiving almost no funds by comparison. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Krugin City. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 18%. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Book Publishing industry.

Government-run screening operations remove embryos with severe genetic disorders, Krugin's schoolchildren are manufactured into a segregated bunch of soldiers, religious zealots, and computer technicians, the armed forces are locked in an expensive and bloody war abroad to stamp out possible terrorists, and young children are regularly seen wagering pocket money at blackjack tables. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Krugin's national animal is the krugin tiger, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the dagoon.
