The Republic of Kivanconia is a massive, socially progressive nation, ruled by Leader with an even hand, and notable for its hatred of cheese. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 3.151 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Social Welfare, and Healthcare. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Sekercity. The average income tax rate is 97%. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Tourism.

Kivanconia is notorious for its citizens' infidelity, citizens are encouraged to report friends, family members or co-workers who seem depressed to the government for "counselling", bizarre-looking creatures called 'kedidogs' dominate wildlife preserves, and photographers can be found hiding behind the curtains in Leader's bedroom. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Kivanconia's national animal is the kedi, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the lira.
