The Inevitable Return of King Koopa I is a colossal, environmentally stunning nation, ruled by King Koopa with an iron fist, and renowned for its anti-smoking policies. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 8.293 billion are rabid consumers, partly through choice and partly because the government tells them to and dissenters tend to vanish from their homes at night.

There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded, corrupt individuals is effectively ruled by the Department of the Environment, with areas such as Social Equality and Social Welfare receiving almost no funds by comparison. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Mushroomopolis. Income tax is unheard of. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Max Barry is this year's Miss King Koopa I, a large percentage of the poor live from cradle to grave in subterranean wage slavery, motels cater primarily to adulterers, and the rich are forced to sell their cars to pay for more police to prevent their cars from being stolen. Crime is crippling, probably because of the country's utter lack of prisons. King Koopa I's national animal is the psylocybin goomba, which is also the nation's favorite main course, its national religion is Islam, and its currency is the gold coin.
