It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Commerce, Education, and Law & Order. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Tourism industry, followed by Book Publishing and Woodchip Exports.

Citizens are forced to donate blood once every three months, glittering new sports stadiums adorn every city and town, conductors wield diamond-encrusted batons to fit in with their freshly gilded surroundings, and parents live in fear of governmental 'child protection' squads. Key Atlantis's national animal is the cat, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, its national religion is Christianity, and its currency is the Silver Ounce.
