The Republic of Karania is a huge, genial nation, remarkable for its punitive income tax rates. Its compassionate, cynical population of 707 million are ruled by a mostly-benevolent dictator, who grants the populace the freedom to live their own lives but watches carefully for anyone to slip up.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Defence, and Law & Order. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Karania City. The average income tax rate is 67%. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

The government is cutting back on the number of political prisoners executed each year, rag-wearing teachers are often mistaken for homeless people, the education system is famed for its taxing exams, and 'unconventional' weaponry has been banned. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Karania's national animal is the Peregine Falcon, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Kara.
