The Submachine's Dimension of Hiperborea is a massive, socially progressive nation, renowned for its complete lack of prisons. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 2.212 billion hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, liberal government stops and the rest of society begins, but it devotes most of its attentions to Education, with areas such as Religion & Spirituality and Defence receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 81%. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

The "Underwear of Women in Power" issue of The Hiperborea City Times is sold out, teenagers across the country are celebrating the defeat of a national curfew bill, Max Barry is this year's Miss Hiperborea, and the sound of wooden legs echo throughout Hiperborea after the recent introduction of the Foot Tax. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is crippling, probably because of the country's utter lack of prisons. Hiperborea's national animal is the Chimera, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the Turd.

Hiperborea is ranked 9th in Secularia and 127,578th in the world for Largest Mining Sector, scoring -8 on the Blue Sky Asbestos Index.
