The Kingdom of Hemmia is a massive, devout nation, ruled by King Adolf Fredrik with an even hand, and renowned for its complete lack of public education. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 1.557 billion are highly moralistic and fiercely conservative, in the sense that they tend to believe most things should be outlawed. People who have good jobs and work quietly at them are lauded; others are viewed with suspicion.

There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded individuals juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Religion & Spirituality, and Commerce. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Frisborg. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 3%. A healthy private sector is dominated by the Automobile Manufacturing industry.

Marketing departments of corporate giants compete to sponsor little league teams, new religious sects are squashed immediately by the government, the government funds private schools for intellectually gifted children, and military spending is on the increase. Crime is pervasive. Hemmia's national animal is the skvader, which is also the nation's favorite main course, its national religion is Church of Hemmia, and its currency is the mark.
