The Kingdom of Grand Avalonia is a massive, economically powerful nation, ruled by King Hilarius LXI with an even hand, and renowned for its keen interest in outer space. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 2.311 billion enjoy some of the most opulent lifestyles in the region, unless they are unemployed or working-class, in which case they are variously starving to death or crippled by easily preventable diseases.

The enormous, liberal, pro-business government juggles the competing demands of Defence, Education, and Commerce. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Lancaster. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 14%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Tourism, Information Technology, and Book Publishing industries.

Police spend their Saturday nights breaking up illegal street races, same-sex marriages are increasingly common, citizens select which government department gets their income tax Aureuss each year, and people can often be seen driving to work in war-surplus tanks. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is crippling. Grand Avalonia's national animal is the Owl, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Aureus.
