The Clan of Graham de Montrose is a massive, socially progressive nation, ruled by Lord Montrose with an even hand, and renowned for its complete absence of social welfare. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 4.554 billion enjoy some of the most opulent lifestyles in the region, unless they are unemployed or working-class, in which case they are variously starving to death or crippled by easily preventable diseases.

There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded individuals concentrates mainly on Defence, although Commerce and Education are on the agenda. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Montrose. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing, Information Technology, and Retail industries.

Elections have become procedural nightmares due to voters persistently rejecting candidates, ethnic minorities are often refused admission to some of the nation's best schools, parents are held criminally responsible for their children's crimes, and commercial jingles have been ham-handedly forced into world renowned symphonies. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is crippling, and the police force struggles against a lack of funding and a high mortality rate. Graham de Montrose's national animal is the Black Stallion, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Trade Mark.
