The Federation of Golden riverside is a massive, economically powerful nation, ruled by Alistair Crowle with an even hand, and remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 2.56 billion have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent, corrupt government stops and the rest of society begins, but it is mainly concerned with Defence, although Education and Law & Order are on the agenda. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Academy City. The average income tax rate is 95%. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Arms Manufacturing industry.

Flash floods that dams could have controlled regularly ravage small towns in mountain valleys, city rooftops are pockmarked with the shattered remains of experimental delivery drones, the government snoops on private internet connections, and children as young as twelve are conscripted into the armed forces. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Golden riverside's national animal is the octodog, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the euro.
