The Borderlands of Ertia is a huge, environmentally stunning nation, renowned for its ban on automobiles. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical population of 603 million are ruled by a mostly-benevolent dictator, who grants the populace the freedom to live their own lives but watches carefully for anyone to slip up.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Law & Order, Social Equality, and Public Transport. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Little Ertia. The average income tax rate is 68%, and even higher for the wealthy. A large private sector is dominated by the Uranium Mining industry.

Convicted murderers are free to walk the streets provided they attend rehabilitation classes, riots have broken out as a water shortage threatens Ertia's stability, the mining industry is making inroads into environmentally sensitive areas, and an increasing percentage of the population's youth have homosexual parents. Crime is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Ertia's national animal is the Dog, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Connie.
