The High Republic of Erid Lor is a colossal, economically powerful nation, ruled by Philip Bourne with a fair hand, and notable for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 9.97 billion hold their civil and political rights very dear, although the wealthy and those in business tend to be viewed with suspicion.

It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Argentum. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Arms Manufacturing industry.

Voters must frequently select what they view as the lesser of two evils on the ballot, radio shows frequently feature people denouncing religion, crowds of flag-burning protesters tend to accidentally become crowds of burning protesters, and the recently unemployed can often be seen at the local homeless shelter. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Erid Lor's national animal is the griffin, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the denarii.
