The Colony of Dutch East Indies is a massive, economically powerful nation, ruled by Governor-General Hubertus van Mook with an even hand, and remarkable for its barren, inhospitable landscape. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 3.498 billion are free to succeed or fail in life on their own merits; the successful tend to enjoy an opulent (but moralistic) lifestyle, while the failures can be seen crowding out most jails.

There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded, pro-business individuals concentrates mainly on Law & Order, although Defence and Commerce are on the agenda. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Batavia. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 2%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Retail, Furniture Restoration, and Automobile Manufacturing industries.

Dutch East Indies's airwaves are dominated by corporate-backed commercial radio, the people elect the Supreme Court justices directly, the government has ordered a moratorium on referenda, and the workforce is almost entirely made up of slave labour. Crime is crippling. Dutch East Indies's national animal is the Anoa, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Gulden.
