The Telefonrundspruch of Drahtfunk is a massive, safe nation, remarkable for its complete absence of social welfare. Its hard-nosed, cynical population of 1.62 billion are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."

The enormous, corrupt, moralistic government devotes most of its attentions to Law & Order, with areas such as Social Welfare and Commerce receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 33%, but much higher for the wealthy. Private enterprise is illegal, but for those in the know there is a slick and highly efficient black market in Information Technology.

Citizens wishing to be parents must undertake a series of gruelling tests to evaluate their capabilities, women who display their ankles are shunned by society, minority children spend hours bussing to schools miles away from home, and all citizens are solely referenced by their allocated identity number. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Drahtfunk's national animal is the funkapotamus, and its currency is the grenzmauer.
