The Indifferent Gods of Derscon is a gargantuan, socially progressive nation, ruled by Mahatzar Alexei I Andropov with a fair hand, and notable for its complete absence of social welfare. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 18.123 billion live in a state of perpetual fear, as a complete breakdown of social order has led to the rise of order through biker gangs.

There is no government in the normal sense of the word; however, a small group of community-minded, liberal, pro-business individuals is mainly concerned with Education, although Law & Order and Public Transport are on the agenda. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Kaesthondheim. Income tax is unheard of. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Information Technology industry, followed by Arms Manufacturing and Book Publishing.

Electrocution deaths among computer technicians are at an all-time high, divorce lawyers are found begging on the streets, a typical fast food menu item could serve a small army, and employers are gradually adapting to the alien premise of paying wages to their workers. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is a problem. Derscon's national animal is the Albino squirrel, which is also the nation's favorite main course, its national religion is Cult of the Dragon God, and its currency is the Xelmark.

Derscon is ranked 12th in Grand Alliance and 94,134th in the world for Most Compassionate Citizens, scoring -255 on the Kitten Softness Rating.
