The Confederacy of Derpenia is a massive, socially progressive nation, ruled by President Starbuck with a fair hand, and notable for its complete absence of social welfare. Its hard-nosed, hard-working, intelligent population of 1.394 billion are effectively ruled by a group of massive corporations, who run for political office and provide their well-off citizens with world-class goods and services. Their poorer citizens, however, are mostly starving to death while being urged to go out and get real jobs. The populace has reasonably extensive civil rights, although these are mostly aimed at allowing them to buy whatever they like.

The tiny government juggles the competing demands of Defence, Religion & Spirituality, and Law & Order. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Herpolis. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 3%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing, Uranium Mining, and Soda Sales industries.

Surveillance cameras are banned, the tenet of free speech is held dear, the government is seen to favor Catholics, and customs turn away those considered to have an unfavourable ethnicity. Crime is a major problem. Derpenia's national animal is the Pegasus, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Derp Buck.

Derpenia is ranked 180th in Capitalist Paradise and 21,727th in the world for Largest Insurance Industry, scoring 2 on the Risk Expulsion Effectiveness Rating.
