The Allied States of Dayth is a huge, devout nation, remarkable for its keen interest in outer space. Its hard-nosed, intelligent population of 816 million have some civil rights, but not too many, enjoy the freedom to spend their money however they like, to a point, and take part in free and open elections, although not too often.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Defence, Religion & Spirituality, and Law & Order. The average income tax rate is 39%, but much higher for the wealthy. A powerhouse of a private sector is dominated by the Arms Manufacturing industry.

Rupert Bear is considered to be the most risqué TV programme in Dayth, the people elect the Supreme Court justices directly, children as young as eight can be found working in factories, and minority children spend hours bussing to schools miles away from home. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Dayth's national animal is the Daythian Wolf, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation, and its currency is the Sovereign.
